To see how this week's Writer's Workshop prompts, please pop over to John Holton's blog post. There are six to choose from. Feel free to join in or jump from blog to blog and read everyone's creativity!
Here is mine, based on prompts two and three: 2. Write a post in exactly nine (9) sentences. 3. What’s taking up the most mental space for you right now? She’s retiring in a few months and taking all of her payroll mathematical expertise with her. “Good for her,” said sarcastically, because there’s no one else to take her place but me—the girl whom my 6th grade teacher said couldn’t go to pre-algebra with her buddies but had to take the “special” math class, the same girl who failed Math 101 in college six years later. Yes, I’m it—the payroll savior—and I’m afraid we’re all screwed! “Shouldn’t computer programs do all the figuring out of employees’ pay, leave, days worked, and what’s owed when transferring from one position to another?” you ask. One would think so, but no! There is so much done by hand with a calculator and a ticker tape—a freaking ticker tape—that huge, catastrophic mistakes can be made! I alone could take down a whole school district by overpaying people by billions! My poor financial director must be wondering how it has come to this. Together, we will pray to the payroll gods, sacrifice old calculators, burn ticker tape, and then hope the payroll gods accept our offerings and look favorably upon us !
People have come and gone in our department, moving on to other positions, that I don't think any of us had planned on me being the one to take over this particular duty. From the get go, I had said I was NOT a numbers gal, yet here I am. But, I am learning and doing my best, even surprising myself by taking some of the harder examples and practicing, testing if I can actually calculate the pay correctly. I'm doing pretty darn good so far! There is still SO much to learn! Fortunately, I have until June (possibly August if her health allows) to leech onto her and suck all the knowledge I can.
Leave a comment and let me know you stopped by! I love comments and they will help me feel encouraged in my effort to learn math in the next few months :)

Geez, that sucks. I've always been good with numbers, but also always found it boring. I do wish you all the best in your new role. I'm sure you'll do better than you think. <3
