Six Sentence Story - "Flag" #wordprompt

4/23/2026

For a moment I was hopeful that I could proudly display the flag again.

Because in the most recent years, the flag had been taken over by a certain demographic on the back of their jacked up trucks, tattooed on their chests, or draped over their shoulders as they rushed the capitol.

But there was a chance, a new hope, that the flag was going to become a flag for everyone, like it once had been, before it started to morph and stand for something slightly different.

The flag now caused you to doubt if we all believed the same any more, and instead of uniting, had seemed to do the opposite by dividing.

So, yes, when there was hope, I was excited and ready, flag in near hand!

But alas, divided we still stand and my flag is still hidden for fear someone might lump me in the wrong crowd.

Yes, some flags and symbols do that. It's a pity. It was a good six to read, thanks for sharing.

go back (in your mind)... the freak flag was a celebration of other-hood
perhaps the difference now is that while there will always be 'others', the majority are throwing in with 'the Man'* (out of fear, insecurity...matters not)

'Mr. Businessman' was the target of derision (for some of us) not celebration as is now too much the case

good Six

* damn! if that expression don't time-travel yer ass nothin' will lol

Even here in England, the St George's flag which is the flag of England, is hoisted in the name of political nationalism. It's a worrying trend.

though I can appreciate the 'Stars and Stripes' I've never flown it myself as I know too much about Native Americans and the history of the millions of Africans and others who were brought there by force and made to build the US against their will, to say nothing of the 'founding fathers' who were not the upstanding characters most Americans were led to believe they were in school. the US has a sordid history at best, and the more you dig, the worse it gets. the current administration is merely the most recent atrocity in a long line of monstrous behaviors.

Sadly, when I see an American flag posted, I hesitate to post my more liberal flag, opting to support my causes in quite, more private quarters. Sad, but that's where we are...
