"Scratch an Itch"... today's writing prompt. When I hear those two words all I can do is sigh and then chuckle in resolution.
I know this is cute saying, but in this situation I'm taking it literally, and I sigh and chuckle again. I have actually written blog posts YEARS ago about my experiences with scratching and itching all due to my pregnancy with my daughter twenty-two and a half years ago. Yes, twenty-two years ago. I had six weeks left in my pregnancy when I broke out in a rash that covered my entire body except for my face, the palms of my hands, and the bottoms of my feet. It was HORRIFIC! Nothing stopped the itch. Nothing made it go away for more than a few minutes at a time. Hundreds upon hundreds of dollars were spent in trying to find a cure (steroids, oatmeal baths, creams, flaxseed oils). You name it, I tried it. Imagine being covered in hundreds of hives, THEN rolling in poison ivy, and THEN being bitten by a horde of mosquitos - even THAT doesn't even come close to what it felt like!
Come to find out it was a disorder called PUPPP. It was so intense that I would scratch so hard I would cause myself to bleed. The more you scratched, the more the itch would build. I thought I would rip through my skin, dig it off!
Eventually, I had my baby, hoping that by birthing her the itching would simply go away. But it didn't. It lessened, but it decided to stick around. Here is the thing, as I said before, my girl is now twenty-two and I still have itching and scratching issues. I have to be careful. I can scratch and scratch and scratch without stop, if I don't do something about it. I am definitely SO much better than I was (I have had a lot of practice), but I still have bottles of SARNA lotion in my cabinet for really bad days (this lotion is my life saver...ALL these many years later. I really should've bought stock). Oh, no! Writing about itching is starting to make me itch. I'm not joking, so I will stop here, but I've linked the other blogs which provide more information on how I delt with PUPPP. Ahhh, I gotta laugh again! Go "Scratch an Itch" and don't take it literally like I did :) Pick up a hobby or knock something off your bucket list. Itchy, Itchy, Itchy ME! Perpetual Itching Angela Thank you, Linda G. Hill for the prompt
