Honey & Paper Nests
The mish-mosh treehouse made of scraps and pilfered nails held our weight—barely.
Two Tarzans. Two Janes. One tree. “Bring us honey!” one Jane demanded of the hive, hanging from a distant branch. Two Tarzans gave the jungle call and pretended to gather the request from the papery nest. Two Janes mocked. “Forget it,” Jane number two said, “I’ll do it myself!” Down the tree and through the grass she trotted, swinging a large stick, braver than any Tarzan. The other Jane followed. One whack, then two, then three. Four children quickly found that hornets do not honey they make.
(100 Words Exactly / Inspired by true childhood events, and no, I was not Jane number two).
